Production Evaluation - Helpsheet...(Mr Haycocks Smells!)

GCSE Media

Production Report help sheet

I have produced a basic account of the editing process that

follows chronologically

Begin by writing about the production from the beginning. What were your first steps? Did you plan in any way? Storyboard, treatment, layout? What research did you do and how did this help to influence the final piece?

I have commented on issues that arose during the production task

Talk about any issues that arose such as... time delays, problems with software/computers, group issues (was anybody late/not there/bossy etc?

Other issues might arise when you want to include something in a production but are constrained by different issues. This could be an inability to achieve through lack of knowledge of software / legal (somebody else’s idea / images) or ethical (glorification of drugs / smoking or racism / homophobia / xenophobia)

I have shown an understanding of how the product links to the

target audience.

Explain how you have achieved this. What is in/on the magazine that will attract the target audience? Maybe type of stories / cover lines, choice of cover image / model, colours, typefaces used, etc.

I have made judgements about my work

Attempt to judge your work against professional texts (real magazines), how do you think it would fair? Be really honest and remember to use media language. Put an image of your magazine in context of a newsagent’s shelves.

I have reflected on the outcomes of the task in relation to my

original aims

Refer back to the drawing (mock layout) that you did, and discuss the things that have changed since then. Possibly the covers lines have become more sophisticated? (Rule of three, alliteration etc) How about the typeface, has that changed?

I have commented on ideas for promotion and distribution

Where will your magazine be sold? (don’t just say ‘shop’) How would you promote the new magazine if you were just starting off? What other magazines would you use to advertise in?

I have observed any issues that may affect the target audience

Your target audience may not be willing to spend large amounts of cash on your magazine... how are you going to get round this problem? Think about your target audience... is there anything that your magazine would HAVE to do to accommodate them? (size, price, material, frequency, material)

I have produced a well drafted document with the structure of an

evaluative report

Does you report read clearly? Are there images and graphics to back up the points being made? Have you included footnotes for any other pieces of information that would make the work count too long?

I have reflected critically on the process and product and have

outlined areas for possible revision

What would you do differently if you were to attempt it again. Think about the whole process from drawing out the cover, taking the photos, editing them in Photoshop, writing the cover lines and feature, designing the contents etc. What would look better?

Production Evaluation.........(:

At the start of the music video production we researched by looking at loads of other music videos (1)In our group we chose 'Honey Honey' from Mamma Mia. We chose this song because it lent itself to having a good narrative written about it (2) We then wrote a treatment about what we wanted to happen in our music video. After we finished the treatment we made a storyboard with pictures that we drew of our music video stages, each member of the group were given a task on drawing about 20 pictures for the story board. After we drew them we learnt a little bit more on final cut (3) When we finished learning these we made an animatic with the pictures we had drawn from our storyboard.
After we had completed the animatic we made a shot list, we did this so it would be easier to start filming at the start of the lesson so that we wouldn’t have to panic about the order of the event and it would be organized, we also did this so that we didn't miss any camera angles/shots etc. that we may need for our finished product.

We then went out to do some filming. We did this over a period of lesson's this was so we could have everything that we needed. We then went and edited it on Final Cut, as we edited the footage we took, we used the techniques we had learnt from a previous lesson. As we got through our editing we realised that we did not have everything we needed, so we had to go out and film the rest of the missing footage, After we had done that we went back to edit it again. During the production we experienced a few problems. Not having enough footage to fit the music video, and on a few days one of the group members was not present, And my computer wouldn't open Final Cut. These were all problems that made the production process go slower, even though it was slower, it is all worth it, because we were pleased with the end product.

With our music video we decided that we would go for a target audience of teenagers. We decided this because we thought it was the best sort of age that would appeal with this song. Also, the music video we have made is the sort of this that is typical for a teenager to go through, we did it for this target audience because we amplify what they would go through (4) I think that there are many things that have a lot of quality in my video; therefore I think that when someone is looking for a song on the music channels they will be attracted to the music video, and then make them want to watch the video over and over again. I think that the music video links well with the target audience because there is a good narrative and the people within the video are a similar age to the target audience (5)

I think that the music video will be known by it being on music channels etc. The music video will be on music channels such as chartshow TV, Starz etc. I would put the music video on this channel as the song fits in with the genre of music on these specific channels (6). In our plan of the music video we used nothing controversial. This means that we didn’t use anything that would offend anyone in the audience.

Notes:
1- In the research we looked at quite a few music video’s by Abba, we did this to see how there videos are so that we could make ours slightly like theirs to make it appeal to the target audience. We noticed that they use pictures of the people in the band, so to keep it original to use that idea in our music video. The generic conventions Abba is over the top clothes, and overly dramatic dance moves etc.

2- The music video lent it self because the lyrics are very easy to make a music video story about it. Also the song lent itself as it is so catchy it makes the audience want to watch it. This song was an ideal choice for our music video becase it is a happy song, and very catchy.

3- We learnt how to change the colour of the footage, add effects such as split screen, make the music track quieter and the footage that we filmed louder so we could hear what is being said in the introduction, how to change the speed of the footage ( to make it slower or faster).

4- For example. Exaggerated slaps, exaggerated looks. we did this so that it looks almost cartoon like, it is hyperreal. Also we did this because the song itself is over the top, Melodramatic.

5- with the target audience being the same age as the people in the video it makes the target audience more attracted to the video.

6- the channel Starz and chartshow TV would have songs from taylor swift, rihanna, JLS etc. I think for better promotion that the band should be on a music channel being interviewed.

GCSE Production of a Music Video

Group Members :Jasmine, Joanne,Sean, Victoria :)
Date: 4th march 2009

Following the brainstorming session and research, note down you initial ideas in detail.

Track name: Honey, Honey by Abba Genre pop.

What are the Genre characteristics?

in our video we have not included all of the genre characteristics. The genre characteristics of pop includes, Music and visual reference, Dance routines, narrative, Bright colors, super smiley faces, over the top gestures. in our music video we included, music and visual reference, narrative, Bright Colors smiley faces and over the top gestures. We decided to miss out dance routines because if we put it in the video it will not look right due to the story we have come up with.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

The lyrics are amplified in the video. this helps the story be put across to the audience, making it less confusing, and easier to follow. Using this method it should attract a wider audience. In our video we have used this when it says " The way that you hold me tight" Sean and Jasmine and Sean And Joanne Hug on split screen. Another example is when the lyrics say " the way you kiss me goodnight" Jasmine and Sean And Joanne and Sean blow a kiss on split screen.

What is the relationship between music and visuals?

The relationship between the music and visuals is a weak connection. We made it this because at the start we have the two girls really happy due to having a boyfriend. when the music first starts it is very cheerful and happy. this makes our music and visuals have a small connection.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs? When?

there are lots of close ups involved in this video. We have made close ups on the main people in the video so that we can see their emotions more clearly. Also we have included closeups so that people will recognise our faces. This may make our band stand out more than other bands due to the way we have included these in our video.

Is there reference to the notion of looking? Where?

there is a small reference to the notion of looking. At the end the notion of looking is quite strong. we can see this when the two girls are both looking at the boy but at the same time the guy is looking at both of the girls.

Are there intertextual references?

We have used intertextual reference's at the start of our music video. We added in pictures at the very start that fall down and hit the floor. This is an intertextual reference because in abba's song lay all your love on me it has pictures coming up on the screen. this shows that we have looked at some other video's by Abba and took some idea's from them so that we can use it in our video and make it more effected.

Is it performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based? How much of each?

our music video is basically all narrative. We used the lyrics to look for a story. this was to show that we understood the lyrics within the song to make the music video more affective.

Is there need for any special effects? (Blue screen, split screen, colour overlay, titles)

there is a need to use split screens so that we can show that Sean is seeing both Jasmine and Joanne. the use of split screen makes us see that sean is cheating this adds the effect to the story within the video.

Evaluation For Treatment (media)!

Evaluation!

I planned my music video this way because i thought that if i were to make the video and the song to match it would be quite interesting. i Wanted my lyrics and visuals to link so that the song and the video would be more easy to follow and more appealing to the audience. I also wanted the audience of my product to be intrigued by the use of links in the song and the video. As i was planning my music video I found a few difficulties along the way. These being that i could not think of anything else to put in my video. These things being very small details such as detail about the rich snobs down a high street with broken heels and make-up smeared down their face. I did lots of research as well to get the outcome of my video. This research consists on looking at the other video's by this artist and about 5 hours of watching other music videos by other artists, i did this to make sure i'd chosen the right song and genre to get the genre characteristics right.I did this by watching them on you tube. As i looked at these music video's i looked out for the interesting and the unusual things within it and extracted a few of them and put it in mine to get the audiences reactions to be the same.I used genre characteristics As the music video is a rock/pop song, i used the use of comedy, band performances and narrative. I did this as it makes the audience more interested in watching the music video. The use of comedy keeps the audience interested therefore they wont get bored. The use of narrative makes the video stick in your head more so people would remember it better. I thought that it was a good idea to use these points as it will attract more people and make more people listen to that sort of music. I also used the use of notion looking at the start of the music video.

In my music video i used closeups, establishing shot,& long shot. I used closeups so that i could show emotion of the band. eg. when the band get arrested there is a close up on their face to show that they are not upset or angry that they are arrested but in fact they are happy and looking smug about it. I used long shot on the band when they are performing in the chorus. i chose to use this as you can see all of the band members and the money surrounding them on the floor. I used establishing shots to show the street where the rich snobs were walking down, i used this so we could see them more clearly and so that we could see their surroundings. My target audiences are mainly for teenagers but can also be for adults as well.I think the video would get through to the target audience as they might be living the life that the band are in the video and therefore want to change what they want in life.

My ideas for a music video relates to a few video's such as Good charlottes-The river, Good Charlotte-Keep Your Hands off my girl And a few abba songs aswell. This relates as there is band performances, and closeups on the singer. i think that there is quite a big competition with the videos as there are still really good ones out there from other artists but i feel that the video will reach the target audience as quite a good video to watch. i plan to do this by advertising it on websites or even putting it onto music channels.

As i was writing my treatment i found that i was unable to put in a few points that i wanted to as the music video has to be shown on the daytime TV. These things are use of drugs as some small children amy see them.
